In other news

Mabel had her first real person poo. Skipped a picture, hope everyone understands. We're not sure if it was due to the broccoli or perhaps the kale and garlic... maybe cereal... but she has now crossed into big kid poo.

On Friday morning we had our 6 month photo shoot with Barbie Hull again. She did pregnant and 1 month pics for us and was back for the next installment. We should get those pics back in a few weeks. Mabel was pretty good, but she continues to work on getting her two top teeth to drop in and has bouts of fussiness. Sleeping well, but when she is up she has at least a hand in her mouth - not the best for pictures.

Homeward Bound

It looks like the Muzzafoos family has avoided homelessness. We have a house!!! (pending inspection and sewer scope on Wednesday, appraisal, and final financing so please knock on wood if you just read the prior sentence) Set to close 3/26, we should be able to link the sale of our home and moving in.

The house is a 1910 house in a good neighborhood. It has 4 bedrooms, 3 on the top floor with 2 bathrooms, a finished basement, small yard for the 4-footed kids, and a kitchen in need of a remodel. It is more than twice the size of our current place so it should hold us for a good while and is just around the corner from the friends we are nanny sharing with.

Believe us when we say they make the kitchen look better than it is.

We first checked the house out on Tuesday but waited to make an offer until we checked out a house two over that recently became available. We went to the second on Thursday and while it had an amazing kitchen, it just wasn't quite as family friendly as the first. After some typical counteroffer action we settled on a price last night.

We're happy that M should have a steady home situation, all things going as planned. This post will self-destruct in 10 minutes if any of the finalization steps don't come together.

Food Update

We've been feeding M a bunch lately. Here is the current list of things she has tried:
- Squash
- Kale with garlic
- Peas
- Broccoli
- Mango
- Banana
- Quinoa cereal (some with cinnamon)
- Spinach
- Cauliflower

So far she likes everything. She always makes a goofy face with her first bite of a new food. If it's something particularly different (mango/banana) she makes a REALLY goofy face. After that she chomps away. We are really happy that she likes her greens. They are actually some of her favorites.

Next...apple and avocado.

House hunting

I have been in a lot of houses in Seattle lately.

I would estimate the number somewhere in the millions. At least that is how tired I am of touring homes. Impending homelessness is a strong motivator.
Today we looked at 3 homes. 1 was nice, 1 was surprisingly promising, and 1 was such a horrendous accident that I can see it never selling. We went to the bad one first - floors like a roller-coaster ride. Pervasive smell, junk filled room with garbage for estate sale, a bathroom with only a sink - not even hook-ups for anything else. The nice house only has 2 bedrooms upstairs, as most homes in Seattle do - which is stupid.

A new listing a few doors down from the great house will be available to tour (yay!) on Thursday. We'll wait on a (lowball) offer for the first until going through the new listing which looks nice in pictures.

Mabel has been a champ at going through many of the homes. She scowls at the right times, like when we discover a "swimming pool" in the basement, covered with a tile floor. She smiles in the bright rooms, liking other kids' rooms the best. It is a new experience for Kate and I to go through a house and try to envision her running around with friends. A new way to view floor plans to be sure.

The hunt continues with the sunrise.

Sunny February

We usually have a nice weather break in February and this would seem to be it.
Time to get Mabel her own pair of sunglasses:

And remember to bring one of her thirty coats:

And buy her a second car mirror thingy to play with:

Paternity leave is nice

Mabel and I have been having a good time this week. Kate has been around but we've had some time to ourselves - going pretty well. She is happy enough with her bottle and the weather has been sunny and warm so we've been outside a lot. It is time to go and pick up a backpack for hiking with Mabel from REI. We'd tried some out before but the weather was too crummy to consider buying one then.

Ignoring the house-hunt, things are good. We met with our new nanny this evening. This was my first time meeting her and she seemed nice and the kids liked her. She will be watching Mabel and our friend's son Eli, both around the same age. For now they'll be just at Eli's house but we're hoping to be able to share that as well once we settle somewhere.

I spent most of yesterday touring the dregs of the current listings in the area. Not so fun or productive. The only house that was OK is an amazing almost finished house where the builder ran out of money and it is now up for short sale - which is not something we're going to gamble on resolving or being involved in. Shame too as it was an amazing place. We do have a 'final' offer out on a second place but we're confident it'll be out second official miss as the owner is pretty deluded.

How are you doing?

That was the question I was asked all day today at my first day back at work. And how was I? Fine. Totally and completely fine.

I woke up and left before M woke up which made it easy to leave. As I got on to the ferry I was greeted by the ticket taker who said "Hey! You're back!" which made for a cheery welcome to my commute. I spent most of the day at work just catching up with people, but did get some work done at the end of the day.

I didn't cry at all - didn't even tear up. I didn't call home until I got on the ferry at the end of the day. It really wasn't hard for me. Which is not what I expected, but will take it.

I'm sure in a month when M is not staying with her dad it will be harder for me, but this is a nice transition.

A swing...

...and a miss. We had an offer in for a house this weekend and just learned that we lost. We are OK with the loss however as the winners waived inspection to win. On a nearly 100 year old house. More power to them.

The house hunt continues. Meanwhile with our place, the inspection is tomorrow (Tuesday). Hoping it goes well.
Tuesday is also the first day that Kate is back at work. Lots of nervous energy around the day, but I'm really looking forward to it.

In other baby news, she is doing great - she likes cauliflower. And was pretty happy with butternut squash. Top teeth haven't popped yet, but there are bumps in her gums and drool. Crazy amounts of drool.

Homeless (sorta)

Two days after re-listing our townhouse from a holiday pause we are in contract pending inspection. Which is nice.

We do not have a house lined up to move to so we've got our work cut out for us. Fortunately I will have time to help deal with things as I am just starting my month of paternity leave.

We're excited and hopeful that the inspection will go smoothly and that we can find somewhere nice to move to for a long, long time.

6 month shots

Mabel got her 6 month shots yesterday. A bit fussy last night, but she also has a bit of a cold and might be working on another tooth. Who knows.

What we do know is she now weighs 17 lb 13 oz and is 26 inches long. That places her in the 88th and 75th percentiles, which we consider just fine.

On the food front, squash was never Mabel's favorite and we've now moved on to peas. Not sure they're her favorite either.

Spa Day

Mabel had her first spa day today. She and I went to an infant massage class where M got a very nice massage. The point of infant massage is to help babies become more familiar with their own bodies, to help babies and parents bond and to help babies learn about appropriate touching. I think Mabel's favorite part was that she got to be naked for an hour and a half. True to form she peed 3 times and pooped twice while naked. That's our girl!

While enjoying her naked time M rolled over from back to front for the first time! We had been looking for the thing that would hold her interest enough to make her want to roll over. All it took was a professional infant masseuse. She is her mother's daughter. Now if only I could teach her to give me a massage.

The mom side of the story

You all know that M had her first food today - see the last post if you missed it. Brett and I have both been looking forward to this day for about 2 months. Over the last couple of weeks I had been getting more and more excited trying to imagine M's reactions to the new goo we put in her mouth. So what happened today after we did it? I cried. And then cried some more.

While it is so fabulous that M is growing and doing well, all these quick milestones are making me realized how fast it is all going by. She just mastered sitting and now eating is starting a mere 2 weeks later. I think if we just fed her I would have been ok, but immediately after we did that I headed up to her room to pack up all of her baby clothes that are too small. That's when the waterworks started.

Don't worry though! I've regrouped and am ready for a new day of firsts with Miss M.

First food! Ever!

Mabel has been watching us eat and mirroring us for a couple months but we'd been waiting for her to be 6 months old before caving in. Well, we cheated by a week.

First we picked out an organic acorn squash about the size of her head.

Then we baked it.

And then this happened:

She might not have asked for seconds or even finished what we offered, but she didn't spit it out (much) and didn't freak out afterward. All told, appears she'll eat food.
