Mastitis and rain

Last night Kate sprouted a mean fever along with some "localized"-pain, confirmed today as mastitis. This is Kate's second round and as fun as last time.

It continues to rain in Seattle for Memorial Day weekend and will Monday as well. Ho-hum. Hope everyone else is baking in the sun and having a healthy holiday weekend.

Hippos and helmets

Mabel continues to love hippos of all sorts.

And now she has a helmet since Kate found us a bike trailer!

Hoping the weather will cooperate so we can take it for a spin tomorrow.

Underwater baby

On Saturday Mabel was completely underwater three times in her swim class. On purpose and without a horrid reaction. Very exciting for everyone.

As mentioned, we made an Ikea run and picked up a little wheeled cart thing for Mabel to walk around with. More of a favorite is the big crazy colored stuffed hippo that we didn't really intend to buy but Mabel insisted. We have an official favorite toy, the likes of which I don't think we've seen before. Too funny.

The house appears to have behaved the past couple days so we're bracing for something really gnarly to fall off or collapse. Or maybe buy a dining room table.

General Update

Some new piece of M's brain clicked together this week and she started doing all sorts of new stuff.

She has started this new laughing thing. I think she realizes that when other people laugh she should or that laughing is contagious because she just shoots out this ridiculous guffaw at random times. It is really great. Too quick to catch on video though.

She is also officially able to pull herself up on pretty much anything. She can pull herself up on the side of our bed and walk the entire perimeter. She can pull herself up in her crib (don't worry, it's been lowered.) She can pull herself up on the legs of my pants. She's pretty much good to go.

We got her a little push cart at Ikea this weekend. She can hang on to that and walk around the house. Much to the chagrin of our backs we still have to follow her around in our typical bent at the waist fashion because she tends to go a bit too fast and falls. She also can't steer it so once she hits a wall/sofa/dog we have to redirect her. Video of this to follow.

The only trouble this new standing/walking ability has created comes at nap time. I used to be able to just lay her down in her crib and after a few minutes she would fall asleep. Now she instantly sits up and spends the next hour standing-sitting-standing-sitting-standing...you get the idea. After about an hour she is really tired, but hasn't figured out how to lay herself down and go to sleep. Thanks to the video monitor I watch her sit down, slump over and sorta fall asleep with her head propped up in the corner of her crib. Then she jerks awake and cries. Fun times.

First word

"Ball" while looking at a ball, not just out of context.

She has also gotten "balloon".

Time to really start watching our language.

9 month check-up

Mabel is 9 months old today. Holy crap! She has now been "out" as long as she was "in". Time is flying.

From the doctor today: 21 lbs 3 oz, 28 inches long, 46 cm head circumference. That puts her in the 85th percentile for weight, 75th for height, and 71st for noggin.

And to think when we first met her she was only 8 lbs 3.1 oz and 19.5 inches long.

A shot and a good report card rounded out the visit.

Swim class fun

Mabel had her third and best swim class today - no crying! We had a really nice time. She spent some time floating on her back and we're getting ready for a dunk move.

Swim class was a real surprise as we had to wake her from a nap. Weirder yet, she slept 13 straight hours the night before. Kate had put her down for her normal ~30 minute nap before dinner, bath, and bed. And Mabel just kept sleeping. No bath, no dinner. We thought for sure she'd be up at about midnight, ready to play and start her day. Nope, 13 hours of uninterrupted sleep.

After swim class Kate (finally) went to the doctor to get her ankle checked. Diagnosis is sprained. With a budding toddler to stoop over, it will take a long time to heal, even with the fancy new air-cast.

Mak is home

He isn't 100% yet, but the hospital felt he was ready to come home. Shouldn't be vomiting, and hasn't since yeserday, taking it easy on his dog bed. Some meds to help keep the cuts in his guts from the plastic to get infected and bland meals for a few days.

Ama was the happiest to see him, edging me out somehow. Nice to him home. And now to further baby proof and puppy proof.
